Grandma Stout's passing, funeral, and burial...
On Wednesday, March 4th Kay Laraine Shaffer Stout passed away just before midnight. The funeral was on Friday, and the burial was on Saturday. Elder Kikuchi spoke about the importance of living up to our privilege of being her posterity and he told us not to be a weak link in the family but to stay strong, live the gospel, and to be good examples. He said, "No Empty Chairs." Tim spoke and he gave a scripture that we just happened to be reading at scripture reading time Alma 40:11 that talks about what happens to us right after death. Uncle Rick gave the life sketch and he talked about Grandpa and Grandma Stout helping to organize the seminary and institute programs in Asia and also their work over the mission in Kobe, Japan. Wendy talked about the plan of salvation and David gave a beautiful testimony about the prophet Joseph Smith and the restoration of the gospel on the earth. Cindy spoke at the burial in Hagerman, Idaho and she spoke about how the veil is thin and about how our loved ones on the other side are able to help us and watch over us while we are here on the earth. It was a wonderful service. There were many beautiful musical numbers: "Consider the Lilies of the Field," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "How Great thou Art," and "I Am a Child of God" in English and in Japanese, and "The Hawaiian Wedding Song," since they were married in Hawaii. After the burial, we went to that same rest stop place in Hagerman, Idaho where we always have our picnics and we visited with the Boise relatives. They sent us home with lots of food.
It was daylight savings time so we set our clocks forward one hour. We had ward conference. President Raines gave the lesson in Relief Society and he spoke about the importance of repenting if we truly have done something wrong, and the importance of turning our troubles over to the Lord and of living in peace if there are matters beyond our control. He talked about applying the power of the atonement in our lives to help us face challenges that come. The Lord is truly at the helm and there is a plan for us, so we need not worry about trials and adversity that will inevitably come as part of our mortal experiences. It was very comforting.
